Bijverdienen met een incidentele erotische massage of andere vormen van dienstverlening is per volgende week niet meer mogelijk op de Amerikaanse prikbordsite Craigslist. Het bedrijf sluit binnen 7 dagen de rubriek ‘Erotic Services‘ en vervangt die door ‘Adult Services‘.
Het verschil tussen die twee is dat in de nieuwe situatie alle nieuwe advertenties met de hand vooraf worden gemodereerd. En dat ze twee keer duurder zijn, een tientje in plaats van nu 5 dollar.
De reden voor de nieuwe maatregel is dat Craigslist al maanden onder vuur van de advocaten en aanklagers ligt en verloren heeft. Eerst klonk de klacht dat de site een grote ongecontroleerde hoerenbuurt zou zijn waar ook minderjarigen erotische diensten aanbieden. Afgelopen weken kreeg de site de wind nog harder tegen omdat een dame die op Craigslist erotische diensten aanbod, dat nooit meer kan doen. Ze werd vermoord. Koren op de molen voor de nee-zeggers.
Op het Craigslist blog klinkt het tegengeluid:
“(…) Unsurprisingly, but completely contrary to some of the sensationalistic journalism we’ve seen these past few weeks, the record is clear that use of craigslist classifieds is associated with far lower rates of violent crime than print classifieds, let alone rates of violent crime pertaining to American society as a whole. (…)”
Directeur Jim Buckmaster reageert tegenover News.com met:
“(…) The first thing the new changes will mean is that it should be much harder to post prostitution ads to the adult section. Filtering text and photos means that ads will also take much longer to appear on Craigslist than in the past. “There will be a wait,” Buckmaster said. “It’s not going to be like the rest of the site where ads will go up in 15 minute or less. We don’t know exactly what that wait will be long-term. It will probably be longer (than 30 minutes initially). New ads will only be reviewed during business hours. Ads posted outside of business hours will wait until business hours will resume.” (…)”
‘Als je het niet ziet, dan bestaat het niet‘, lijkt de redenering van de Amerikaanse jurdische verzetsstrijders. Het immer puntige Techdirt denkt daar iets anders over:
“(…) smart law enforcement officials recognized that they could use Craigslist as a tool to fight prostitution. And, of course, the original changes to Craigslist did little if anything to stop prostitution. Instead, they just made that prostitution move elsewhere, making it more difficult for law enforcement to track it down and deal with it. It’s difficult to see how that’s smart policy. (…) Of course, it’s difficult to see how this ends well. Prostitution will continue. It will just move to other websites, where it will be that much more difficult for law enforcement to track it and respond to it. (…)”
